How Does Invisalign Work?
Invisalign clear aligners are custom-made just for you, virtually invisible, and fit snugly over your teeth. Each aligner shifts your teeth slightly, moving them vertically and horizontally, and they can even rotate the teeth when needed as well. Over the course of your treatment, you will be supplied with a series of aligners, each providing a slight adjustment to the position of your teeth. As you change to the next set of aligners, they will slowly move your teeth into the correct positions, following a customized treatment plan made by your dentist.
We typically recommend Invisalign only for adults and older children, but to help you learn more about your options, we’re happy to offer a FREE orthodontic consultation here at Progressive Dental Group.
Indications for Invisalign
At Progressive Dental Group, we are pleased to offer a truly versatile solution that is capable of fixing all types of orthodontic problems.
Crowded teeth can lead to tooth decay, gum disease, and cavities because of the inability to thoroughly clean and remove bad bacteria. By creating necessary space, it not only improves your appearance but also your oral health.
Spaces Between Teeth
Having spaces that are too far between your teeth can cause food and bacteria to become trapped, increasing your risk for common dental problems. By moving them closer together, you make it possible to enjoy a healthier smile.
Chronic jaw pain and excessive wear and tear on your teeth are just a few consequences of a poorly aligned bite. Clear braces can easily move and adjust your bite so that you can live pain-free.
Why Patients Love Invisalign
- Subtle Appearance: No one will notice you're wearing an Invisalign aligner unless you tell them.
- Comfortable: The smooth plastic fits comfortably with the lips and gums, not causing irritation like metal braces.
- Convenience: Time to eat or brush your teeth? Simply take your aligners out until you are done.
- Speed: In many cases, Invisalign is able to straighten teeth faster than traditional braces.

Do you have questions about what life will be like while undergoing Invisalign treatment? Below, we’ve answered some of the most common ones that we receive from our patients who want to know more about the process. That way, you can make an informed and confident decision.
How long does Invisalign treatment take?
Invisalign is customized to fit the individual needs of each patient, which is why treatment times can vary based on our findings during your initial consultation. We’ll examine your mouth to determine what types of orthodontic issues you face and how severe they are. This will factor into how many aligners you’ll need to wear over the course of your treatment. You’ll wear each set of aligners for about two weeks, but we’ll discuss the timeline and calculate that math for you during your appointment so you know exactly what to expect throughout the process.
How often do I need to clean my Invisalign trays?
It’s important to clean your aligners every day to prevent bacteria accumulation and keep them looking clear. Throughout your treatment, it’s important to follow these hygiene practices:
- Rinse your aligners before you put them back in your mouth.
- Brush your teeth after each time you eat, before you put your trays back in.
- Soak your trays in a 50/50 solution of vinegar and water for 15 minutes to sanitize them.
- Brush your trays every day using a soft-bristled toothbrush and clear antibacterial soap.
If you have any questions that come up during your treatment, don’t hesitate to contact us.
What’s the difference between Invisalign and mail-order dental aligners?
You’ve likely seen ads for mail-order orthodontic appliances through social media or other platforms. These are often marketed as being more cost-effective than Invisalign; however, it’s important to realize that they are not the same treatment. They don’t complete any type of dental assessment beforehand, such as X-rays, and they also don’t provide you with necessary follow-up appointments to ensure that the trays are effective and not harming your teeth or gums.
When you visit a professional, you can count on us being there every step of the way, preventing anything from going wrong. With DIY Aligners and other mail-order orthodontic companies, there’s no telling if your teeth or gum will become damaged over the course of using their aligners.
Will I have to stop eating certain foods?
One great benefit of Invisalign is that you can continue eating all of the same foods that you used to. All you need to do is take your trays out before each meal to ensure that you don’t damage them. Be sure to store them in their hard, protective case and rinse them before you put them back in your mouth. It’s also important to brush and floss after each time you eat to ensure that no food debris becomes trapped between your trays and teeth.
